How much should a small business in Assam spend on Meta ads?

How to set a sensible Facebook and Instagram ads budget for a small business in Assam: what drives cost, how to test, festival seasons and mistakes to avoid.

quick answer

There is no magic number. Start with a test budget you can comfortably spend for two to four weeks, judge it by cost per enquiry rather than reach, then put more money behind what works. The ad budget is paid to Meta; an agency fee is separate.

It is the first question almost every business owner asks us, usually in the first five minutes: “How much should I spend on Facebook ads?” The honest answer is that it depends, but that is not very helpful on its own. So here is how to work it out for your business, whether you are in Guwahati, Jorhat, Tezpur or Dibrugarh.

What decides what your ads cost

  • Who you target. A small, specific audience (for example, women aged 25 to 40 within a few kilometres of your salon) costs differently from a broad one across Assam.
  • How much competition there is. When many businesses want the same people at the same time, prices go up. This is why ads usually get more expensive around Bihu, Durga Puja, Diwali and the wedding season.
  • What you ask Meta to get you. Messages, form leads, website visits and sales are priced and optimised differently.
  • How good the ad is. A clear, eye-catching ad that people respond to is shown more cheaply than one they scroll past.

A simple way to choose a starting budget

Work backwards from what a customer is worth to you. Here is an example with made-up numbers, just to show the method:

  • A new customer brings you about ₹5,000 in profit over their first few purchases.
  • You are happy to spend up to ₹1,000 to win one.
  • From experience, one in four enquiries becomes a customer.
  • So you can afford up to about ₹250 per enquiry.

Now run a small test for two to four weeks. If your real cost per enquiry is comfortably under that line, you have something worth scaling. If it is far above, change the offer, the ad or the audience before spending more.

Your test budget should be an amount you are comfortable spending to learn, not money you need back next week.

How to run the test properly

  • One goal. Pick messages or leads, not both.
  • One or two audiences, kept tight around where your customers actually are.
  • Two or three versions of the ad, such as a photo, a short video and a carousel, so you can see what people respond to.
  • Patience. Meta needs a few days to learn. Changing things every day resets that learning and wastes money.

What “good” looks like

Do not judge ads by likes or reach. Look at three things: cost per enquiry, how many enquiries become customers, and how fast you replied. A cheap enquiry that never gets answered is still a lost customer.

Plan for festival seasons in Assam

If your business sells more around Bihu, Puja, Diwali or weddings, plan for higher costs and start earlier. Build your audience and warm up interest a few weeks before the rush, then spend more when people are ready to buy.

Ad budget versus agency fee

These are two different things. The ad budget goes to Meta and is charged to your own card or account. An agency or freelancer charges separately for planning, creatives, setup, management and reporting. Keep the ad account in your own name so you always own your data and history.

Mistakes that waste money

  • Pressing “Boost” on random posts with no clear goal.
  • Targeting all of India when you only deliver in Guwahati.
  • Judging a campaign after two days.
  • Sending people to WhatsApp and then replying hours later.
  • No tracking, so nobody knows which ad brought the customer.

If you want a second opinion on your budget, or someone to plan, design and run the campaigns, see our Meta ads service or send us a message. We will help you set up a test that tells you something useful.
