quick answer
Get found first, then look trustworthy, then pay to reach more people, then make it easy to reply. For most Guwahati businesses that means a complete Google Business Profile, a consistent brand look, small and well-targeted ads, and fast answers on WhatsApp.
Ask ten business owners in Guwahati where their customers come from and most will say the same thing: word of mouth. That is still true. What has changed is where the word travels. Today a recommendation is usually followed by a quick search on Google Maps, a look at your Instagram page and a WhatsApp message. If any of those steps feels empty or confusing, people move on to the next option.
This guide is the order we suggest to most local businesses, from a café on GS Road to a coaching centre in Ganeshguri or a boutique in Fancy Bazaar. It is not about doing everything at once. It is about doing the right things in the right order.
Step 1: make sure people can find you on Google
When someone searches for “bakery near me” or “dentist in Beltola”, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any website. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and it is free.
- Choose the right category. It is the strongest signal for which searches you appear in.
- Fill in everything: hours, phone, WhatsApp, area, services and a short description in plain words.
- Add real photos of your shop, your team and your work. Update them every few weeks.
- Ask for reviews after every good experience, and reply to every review, including the unhappy ones.
Keep your business name, phone number and area exactly the same everywhere: Google, Instagram, Facebook, JustDial and your website. Small differences make it harder for Google to trust that they are all the same business.
Step 2: look like a brand people trust
Your Instagram grid is now your shop window. People decide in a few seconds whether you look established. You do not need an expensive rebrand, but you do need consistency: one logo, two or three colours, the same fonts and a recognisable style for photos and posts.
A simple test: cover your logo on your last nine posts. Would someone still know they are yours? If not, it is worth setting a few basic rules before spending money on ads.
Step 3: use ads with one clear goal
Boosting random posts is the most common way local businesses waste money. Every campaign should have one goal you can count, such as WhatsApp messages, form enquiries, calls or store visits.
- Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) are best for being discovered by people who are not searching yet: restaurants, fashion, events, salons, real estate and weddings.
- Google Ads are best when people are already searching for what you offer: clinics, coaching, repairs, home services and B2B.
Keep the targeting tight. If most of your customers come from within a few kilometres, there is no point showing ads to all of Assam. Start small, try two or three versions of the ad, and give it a week before judging.
Step 4: answer fast on WhatsApp
Most enquiries in Guwahati end up on WhatsApp, whether they start from an ad, Google Maps or Instagram. Set up WhatsApp Business with a catalogue, a short greeting message and quick replies for the questions you get every day. An enquiry answered in five minutes is far more likely to turn into a customer than one answered the next morning.
Step 5: measure enquiries, not likes
Likes and reach feel good but do not pay the rent. Track how many people messaged, called or filled in a form, how many became customers, and roughly what each one cost you. Even a simple spreadsheet updated once a week will tell you more than any dashboard full of vanity numbers.
Plan around Guwahati’s busy seasons
Bihu, Durga Puja, Diwali and the wedding months change how people shop and how much attention costs. Ads usually become more competitive around big festivals. Plan your content and offers a few weeks ahead, and start campaigns before the rush rather than in the middle of it.
Common mistakes we see
- Running ads before the Google Business Profile and Instagram page look complete.
- Targeting all of India when customers can only reach you locally.
- Sending people to a page that does not answer their basic questions, such as price range, location or how to book.
- Slow replies on WhatsApp.
- Changing ads every day instead of letting a test run.
Where to start this week
If you only do three things: complete your Google Business Profile, ask five happy customers for a review, and set up quick replies on WhatsApp Business. Then look at ads.
